Campus Wide Information System

Images on the UWA Image server are provided in a variety of different formats and sizes, along with size independent versions where appropriate. They are provided as a service for the University community by the CWIS Officer and the Publications Unit.

File Formats

The CWIS Group supports the following image file formats on this server:

GIF 89a
For small to medium images requiring a small colour palette (up to 256 colours, or 217 on the World Wide Web), including transparent images and simple animated images. This is a general Web format. Bitmap format.
Portable Network Graphics (PNG)
As a replacement for GIF 89a. Supports transparency, interlacing, and lots of other features. See W3.org for further information on the format. However, support in Web browsers is still being developed. Bitmap format.
Postscript
For high resolution printing. Vector format.
Encapsulated Postscript
For high resolution printing. Vector format.
Windows Metafile
For high resolution printing in Microsoft Windows (eg, Word, WordPerfect, ...). Vector format.

The vector formats above may be resized to any size without loss of image quality, whereas the bitmap formats have set heights and widths, and any magnification of them will cause a loss of image quality.

Support for Postable Network Graphics (PNG) is developing as a replacment format for Compuserve's GIF 89a. Issues such as ownership of the format and improved features are the driving force behind this transition. However support in web browsers is not wide enough yet for mainstream use of the format.

Web Use

When using images on this server for your web pages at The University of Western Australia, it is recommended that you encode your HTML to point at this image server in place of downloading the image to your own server. This improves caching of the images in client browsers, and reduces the load on your own server and the cost of your network traffic.

To use any of the images in your Web page, grab the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for the image, and place it into your HTML file. It is also recommended that you use the HEIGHT and WIDTH tags with the correct attributes to improve the loading of your web page, along with an appropriate ALT tag for alternate text.

For example, to use the new logo for the University, you would use the following HTML code:

<IMG URL = "http://images.publishing.uwa.edu.au/uwa/logos/block/h_325_86.gif" HEIGHT=86 WIDTH=325 ALT = "The University of Western Australia">

The University of Western Australia
